BoxingScene.com spoke to trainer Jack Loew about Harry Joe Yorgey's upcoming bout against Alfredo Angulo. He also says Kelly Pavlik is set to resume training full speed on Wednesday for his December 5 title defense against Paul Williams. See what else this trainer from Youngstown has to say in this BoxingScene exclusive interview. BoxingScene: How is Yorgey's training camp going so far? Jack Loew: You know I didn't really no much about Harry until I started working with him. I saw him fight against Ronald Hearns and then he and my son became friends and I heard he was looking to make a move so we got ahold of him. The kid works his ass off in the gym. That is what I like the most about him. He has a very tough fight in front of him. Angulo stands right in front of you. He is not a hard guy to figure out. You just got to be able to be in greater shape than him and be able to throw more punches and get him with angles just like Kermit Cintron did. He fought a great fight against him. BoxingScene: So you think conditioning is the biggest key? Jack Loew: For sure. If you die out against Angulo you are in deep trouble. I think as long as you are in as good a shape if not better shape than him and you can get the angles on him I think it will be a good fight for Harry. BoxingScene: What do you think are Yorgey's best attributes? Jack Loew: You know I think people are going to underestimate his strength. I have been working with Billy Lyell, not that he is a great world beater but BIlly is a strong kid and a good straight ahead fighter and Harry has been pushing him around the ring. Even Billy told me that people are going to be really surprised at how strong Harry is. Everyone expects Angulo to be the big strong bad guy so I think they are going to be surprised. BoxingScene: How do you think the fight will play out? Jack Loew: I think we have to finish stronger than we start. I think if we stay in the fight the first four or five rounds and we finish strong the last five rounds I think Harry wins the fight. Angulo actually got stronger as the fight went on with Cintron. Cintron just kept catching him with angles and turning him. That is the thing, you just cannot die out on Angulo. I think if Harry can finish the 6th-10th round better than the first five I think we win the fight. BoxingScene: Switching gears how is Kelly (Pavlik) doing and has he been cleared to start training yet? Jack Loew: I think Kelly will start running today and we can start lifting and doing other things as of Wednesday afternoon because he still has a splint on his finger and he gets it off Wednesday. It was supposed to be Tuesday but we will be in New York on Tuesday for the press conference so he will get that off on Wednesday. BoxingScene: Will he be cleared for padwork, sparring and everything else? Jack Loew: Oh yeah. Once the splint comes off we will have a couple weeks before we start our training camp so we will be lifting weights and working on the hands, making sure we have a full range of motion. We will do some weightlifting and work the tires like he always do for two or three weeks before we start the training camp. Then we will do some serious bag work and sparring. BoxingScene: Paul Williams has only fought twice at 160 lbs. and that was against Winky Wright and Andy Kolle who aren't known for being big punchers. Do you think Kelly's power is the key to the fight? Jack Loew: Yeah I think that is the key to the fight. How well will Paul Williams adjust to us. You know we have fought big guys. Guys with heavy punches. Even coming up we fought guys in the 170s. We have been in there with big strong guys. I think its how Paul Williams adjusts to Kelly Pavlik's power and not how we adjust to how many punches this kid throws around. Remember when you are throwing that many punches per round and you got a guy eye level with you its tough. We are going to touch his chin and see how he reacts. BoxingScene: Do you think Paul Williams will try to emulate Bernard Hopkins and try to turn Kelly all night and keep him off balance? Jack Loew: I think so. I think he is going to try to pull the book on him. I don't think that he is going to stand and trade with us. I think that would be the biggest mistake they made in their life. I think he is going to try to box and just throw a high volume of punches and try to catch us with angles and maybe he will think he can back us up and the thing is Kelly can fight backwards. If he thinks he can back us up then lets go for it. BoxingScene: When Kelly lands a couple clean hard shots how do you expect Williams to react? Jack Loew: We will find out December 5th. Kelly is a great finisher. If he cannot stand up to the firepower it could be an early night for him. BoxingScene: Assuming Kelly comes out with a victory where does he go from there? Does he stay at 160 or move up to 168? Jack Loew: I really don't know what the plans Top Rank and Cameron Dunkin have for him. I think they do definitely want to test the waters at 168 some where down the road before that tournament ends because I know Kelly would love to fight the winner of the Super Six tournament. BoxingScene: Who do you like in that tournament? Jack Loew: I tell you what, don't count Jermain Taylor out against Arthur Abraham. If Taylor doesn't fade in the later rounds I look for him to beat Abraham. If he can beat Abraham he has a good shot to win the tournament. I also like Andre Dirrell. He is not real experienced but he is a really good fighter. I don't think Andre Ward will be in the mix. I think Kessler beats him. BoxingScene: Do you have a message for the fans? Jack Loew: Just tune in November 7th to see Harry Joe Yorgey. It is going to be a real exciting fight and it could be a big step in Harry's career and of course tune in on December 5th for Pavlik and Williams and I know everyone will be watching that. I just wish everyone the best.
