Let’s be honest. Up until the fight was signed for this Saturday night against Alfredo Angulo, not to many outside of his circle even knew that this ex construction worker from Pennsylvania was an up and coming contender. This is a fact that isn’t lost on Yorgey, who may be fighting in his twenty fourth professional fight, but it is most certainly the highest profile fight of his career. Although it may be his second television appearance (he stopped Ronald Hearns on Shobox), Yorgey is not trying to rest on his laurels one bit.

DAWSON-JOHNSON FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Promoter Gary Shaw opened Thursday’s final Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson press conference asking for a moment of silence for Jasper Howard, the University of Connecticut football player who was stabbed to death on campus on Oct. 18.
THE NOV. 14 MEGAFIGHT between WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) is November's must-see event, but there is a wide variety of options for discerning fight fans to choose from this Saturday.

Let's start with the HBO Championship Boxing doubleheader from Hartford, Conn., the main event of which pits Chad Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs) against veteran Glen Johnson (49-12-2, 33 KOs) for the WBC interim light-heavyweight championship.

As appealing as that matchup is, devoted supporters of Bridgeport, Pa., junior middleweight Harry Joe Yorgey (22-0-1, 10 KOs) will focus more on his lead-in bout with Mexico's Alfredo Angulo (16-1, 13 KOs), probably the sternest test the former Upper Merion High running back has faced.

Yorgey finds home at Southside

By Joe Scalzo

YOUNGSTOWN — Light middleweight boxer Harry Joe Yorgey is a blue-collar, no-nonsense type of guy, so when he was looking for a new trainer a few months ago, he didn’t want someone who would tell him he was great.

He needed someone to help him become great.

Enter Jack Loew.

“I don’t want these guys who are like, ‘Hey, you’re the champ right now,’” said Yorgey, a Bridgeport, Pa., native who has trained with Loew the last two months at the Southside Boxing Club. “I want a guy who’s going to push me.

"Twenty thing's you need to know about Harry Joe Yorgey"

Interview done October, 25th, 2009

1) What is the current mood of your training camp about two weeks away from fight night?

Yorgey: Extremely positive and upbeat.
The difference between good and great in the sport of boxing is immeasurable. Some fighters enter the ring fighting for something. Fighters like Bridgeport Pennsylvania’s Lightning Harry Joe Yorgey 22-0-(11KO’s) enter the ring fighting for everything. On Saturday November 7th Glen Johnson will meet Chad Dawson for the second time on HBO championship boxing. That fight is going to be a flat out slugfest, but the undercard is just as interesting, and has all the makings of a classic. Two years ago Yorgey who is now 31 years old was working construction and was banging it out with tough fighters at the Legendary Blue Horizon. The Blue Horizon is where fighters like Bernard Hopkins and Arturo Gatti made their bones, and Yorgey is cut from the same cloth. He is a dig down fighter with real technical proficiency. In a 2005 interview, I asked Harry why he didn’t go for the early knock out more often in his fights. His answer was simple and very lucid. “I want to still have something when I finally get my shot. There is no sense in getting my head bashed in to please the crowd when I know how to hit and not get hit. And when you do that well, the crowd loves it”

Yorgey: Controlling his Destiny

By Rick Scharmberg

This Saturday night at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, world-rated “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey (22-0-1, 10 KOs), of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania will face fellow contender Alfredo “Perro” Angulo (16-1, 13 KOs), of Mexicali, Mexico, and now Coachella, California. They will box twelve rounds for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental junior middleweight title. The winner will also establish himself as a top title contender in the wide-open junior middleweight division. Yorgey is coming off an impressive ninth-round knockout of Ronald Hearns, while Angulo most recently stopped Philadelphia’s Gabriel Rosado in two rounds.
Doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia predicted that Joey's chemotherapy treatments would have him cancer free by the fall of last year, Mrs. Tomchick said, but a blood count in July showed his condition had worsened. "They found the cancer was back," she said. "It was on my birthday.
